Historical outlines: The Rostov Drama Theater was opened on June 23, 1863 with a premiere of The Inspector General by Gogol staged by Nickolay Sinelnikov; famous Russian actor Shchepkin played the key role.
An abode of the Rostov Drama Theater, famous example of the Russian constructivism (it is sufficient to say that in exposition of the Design Museum, London, all Russian architecture is represented by two and only two items, the St Basil’s Cathedral and the Gorky theater), was built in 1935, destroyed during the WWII and rebuilt in 1963. In 1980 the theater was conferred with the status of academic theater.

Staff: 42 artists, including one People’s Artist of USSR, six People’s Artists of Russia and eight Honored Artists of Russia.

Achievements: In 1976 the theater got the Stanislavsky Award for And Quiet Flows The Don by Mikhail Sholokhov’ novel; in 1995 – the First Prize of the National Drama Festival for Alexander Pushkin Little Tragedies.
The theater is an initiator and host of the National Russian Comedy Festival.
Community affairs: The theater participates actively in all significant social and culture programs carried in the region.
Managment: Managing director –Leonid Sklyarov, Honored Worker of Culture of Russia. Art director – Nickolay Sorokin, People’s Artist of Russia.
Plans, prospects: The theater’s plans include staging of The White Guard by Mihkail Bulgakov, Smart Enamored by Lope de Vega and renewed staging of And Quiet Flows The Don by Mikhail Sholokhov.
